Christmas week both second and third graders used TuxPaint, a free painting program, to draw a seasonal picture and make a label or a sentence about their work. You can have TuxPaint on your computer at home, too - download it here. Happy Holidays!!

Ladybug Winner
With 3,467 votes statewide, Waking Beauty, written by Leah Wilcox, was the picture book chosen by the children of NH to win the 2009 Ladybug Award. Here at NHCS, Waking Beauty was an instant hit due to its unusual illustrations, its rhyming pattern, and its humor! If you like this book, Leah Wilcox also wrote another fractured fairy tale called Falling for Rapunzel. We have that book in the NHCS Library Media Center, too!

Ladybug Award Nominees
Again this year, kindergarten, first, and second graders are enjoying listening to each of the picture books nominated for the 2009 NH Ladybug Award. Third graders are reading the books individually or with a friend and are in the process of creating a podcast for the younger children to listen to before voting begins in November. Only kinders through thirds may vote! For a complete list of Ladybug nominees, click right here!

Be Respectful, Responsible, & Safe
When I use technology, I will remember to:
• Be gentle and careful with all equipment.
• Have clean hands – sanitize!
• Sit correctly.
• Keep food, drinks, or magnets away from computers.
• Use only polite language in email, chat, and cyberspace.
• Not touch or copy other another person’s files or work.
• Stay away from online ads.
• Only go to appropriate, approved websites.
• Tell an adult if I see something inappropriate.
• Follow the directions I am given.
• Type carefully, especially when I’m online.
• Keep personal information private and help my friends to do the same.
• Remember that people that I meet online are still strangers and I should not meet them face to-face.

Back to School
And so begins another year of ICT (Information & Communication Technology) at New Hampton Community School! ICT is a blend of 21st century library skills and basic computer technology skills. While at NHCS, each child builds a digital portfolio of technology projects completed in ICT class or in the classroom. Check back often - many of these projects will be featured on this blog as well as other goings-on in our ICT classes across the grades.
